Greg Metcalf of CGM Marine Surveys, Kennebunkport, Maine

My professional experience in the marine industry spans over thirty-five years. My first summer job working on the water was at age seventeen as a mate aboard a charter boat in Galilee, Rhode Island. That is where I was introduced to and learned the skills of operating larger sport fishing crafts while fishing for offshore species like marlin and tuna. I worked my way through college working as a mate aboard private sport fishing yachts fishing in tuna and billfish tournaments from Miami, Forida, to Portland, Maine, during my summer vacations.

After graduating from Providence College I began running private yachts and participating in big game fishing tournaments. Some of my sport fishing accomplishments includes winning top honors in the Nantucket Billfish Tournament, Rhode Island Tuna Tournament, United States Atlantic Tuna Tournament, Point Judith Masters Invitation Tuna Tournament, Block Island Billfish Tournament and The Wentworth Invitational Tuna Tournament.

In 1983 I earned and received my U.S. Coast Guard Captains license and started a fishing tackle company, Atom Manufacturing, the following year. During my startup years I continued to run sport fishing yachts to supplement my income as I grew the fishing tackle business. For the next twenty-five years I designed, manufactured and marketed fishing tackle, fished and spent as much time on the water as possible. During this time period wrote and had articles published in several national and regional magazines such as Sportfishing, Salt Water Sportsman, Marlin, Northeast Game and Fish and The Fisherman Magazine where I currently serve as their Northeast Field Editor.

In 2007 Atom Lures was sold to Uncle Josh Bait Company and I started a charter fishing business aboard my boat, the Striper Swiper in Kennebunkport, Maine. I also became affiliated with Hinckley Yachts as a delivery captain moving company vessels from their facilities to new yacht owners along the East coast. I have executed hundreds delivery days aboard Hinckley jet boats and have become very familiar with their unique design and systems.

Spending thousands of hours on the ocean running multi-million-dollar yachts inspired me to design and create a U.S. Coast Guard approved curriculum for captain license candidates. In 2010 Atlantic Captains Academy was formed and currently conducts training courses in ten states. The Landing Boat Building School in Arundel, Maine is one of our training sites. As an instructor at The Landing School I learned about, attended and successfully completed their marine surveying class and subsequently started CGM Marine Surveys.
